Breast lift surgery (mastopexy) is intended to enhance the appearance of your breasts by restoring them to a more youthful position. By tightening tissue and removing excess skin, the surgery can correct several conditions related to the breasts:
- Excess sagging or breast ptosis
- Lack of firmness
- Descending nipple position
- Breast asymmetry
- Large areola
Conditions such as these are common after childbirth, when increased breast size stretches the tissue. In most women, the skin and ligaments that hold the breasts will weaken over time, at which point a breast lift may be necessary if you wish to correct these conditions.
Breast Lift Incisions
There are 3 common incisions: One incision follows the natural curve of the breast horizontally in what is known as the crease. Another incision travels downward from the bottom of the areola to the crease, and the third travels around the areola.
The purpose of the incisions is to allow Dr. Will access beneath the breast, to suture or remove some excess tissue and reposition the breast and nipple.
Here are two important limitations you may need to know:
- A breast lift does not restore fullness like a breast augmentation does.
- A breast lift is better suited for women with smaller breasts.
However, here is some good news regarding both: breast lift surgery can be performed in conjunction with a breast augmentation (using implants) or a breast reduction.
Anyone who chooses to undergo a cosmetic surgery procedure should be emotionally stable and have realistic expectations. Patients should also be healthy non-smokers with a stable weight and no serious medical conditions.
