Surgeons and dermatologists have been using chemical peels for many years, but the latest peels we offer are more advanced. They’ve become more effective, more comfortable and therefore, more popular. The purpose is to exfoliate the skin and accelerate the regeneration of new cells.
Chemical Peels at Will Surgical Arts
There are deep peels, medium peels, and light peels. The deep peels are comparable to laser resurfacing or dermabrasion, and often used to treat conditions like photoaging, wrinkles around the mouth, acne scars, and precancerous skin lesions. Light chemical peels are intended to remove superficial imperfections with less downtime involved. They may be done in a series, requiring separate visits in 2-week intervals. Some of the most common chemicals used in a chemical peel include the following:
- TCA - Trichloroacetic Acid
- Glycolic acid
- Salicylic acid
- Phenol
- Alpha-hydroxy acid
- Pyruvic acid
- Jessner’s solution
At Will Surgical Arts, we have found that chemical peel formulas using the first 3 types – TCA, glycolic acid, and salicylic acid – offer the ideal combination of measurable results and patient comfort.
How is a chemical peel performed?
Applying a chemical peel first involves deciding on the right formula for a particular patient and their skin type. When a formula has been chosen, it is applied to the face with cotton applicators, starting on the forehead and gradually covering the face and frequently the neck area as well. It stings initially, but most patients adjust to it quickly. Pain medications administered through iv sedation are sometimes used to minimize discomfort. The procedure can take 20 minutes or over an hour, depending on the depth of penetration needed and the type of peel.
After the Chemical Peel
After a chemical peel, patients may experience some redness, dryness and flaking. People often say it is similar to sunburn. It takes about a week for the new skin to emerge, but after healing, you’ll exhibit a healthy, fresh complexion and have fewer blemishes.
