Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing has become very popular in the world of dermatology and cosmetic surgery. Dr. Will uses the Palomar StarLux 500 laser and light-based therapy system to treat sun-damaged skin, facial wrinkles, and scars.

What is a laser?

The word "laser" is an acronym, which stands for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A surgical laser, such as the Co2 laser, is a beam of light capable of removing unwanted tissue, such as scarred, lined, wrinkled, pigmented, redness and otherwise imperfect skin.

The laser vaporizes skin cells by emitting bursts of radiation that are absorbed by water in these cells. Laser light penetrates to a very precise, controlled depth, making the procedure safe and predictable, while reducing the risk of scarring or pigmentation problems. The procedure is bloodless, and is performed right here in our office, under light sedation.

What are the benefits of laser skin resurfacing?

The laser is used to reduce tiny wrinkles, acne scars, pigmentation, redness and other minor skin imperfections, especially around the mouth and eyes. It can greatly improve sun-damaged and acne scarred skin, problems that negatively affect both men and women. Laser resurfacing is used as an alternative to chemical peels or dermabrasion, but it causes less pain, requires less recovery time, and is often more cost-effective.

The Procedure

A local anesthetic is provided to ensure your comfort during the procedure. The area is cleansed and draped. Dr. Will applies the laser energy in a consistent pattern toward the targeted skin imperfections, which quickly vaporizes the outermost skin layers and stimulates your body’s healing response.

Recovery and Results

In most cases, a series of treatments are needed. The initial redness fades in a day or so. The final results are evident after the series of treatments are complete. The goal of laser resurfacing is to enhance and rejuvenate facial appearance. Expectations by the patient must be realistic, and results should be anticipated as improvements rather than total corrections.

Results of the procedure will partly depend on your age, heredity, and particular skin conditions. Many patients see a dramatic improvement in skin texture and tone. Schedule a consultation today to see if laser skin resurfacing may work for you.
