Otoplasty

Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is a surgical procedure that corrects the overly prominent ears of many children and adults. Statistics show that otoplasty is a highly satisfying procedure for the majority of patients, with a satisfaction rate that’s actually above 95 percent. Prominent ears are caused by a defect in a person’s cartilage structure or basically, a failure of proper cartilage folding. Otoplasty surgery allows the surgeon to create the proper fold and improve the esthetic relationship of the head and ears.

Who should undergo otoplasty?

It is very common for children to undergo otoplasty. If a child exhibits prominent ears, or ‘bat ears’ (as some have labeled it), physicians often recommend surgery at a young age so the child doesn’t have to become overly conscious of the condition or experience teasing. Otoplasty has been successfully performed on children as young as 5 years of age. Once the ears have developed sufficiently, it becomes appropriate to perform the operation.

How is otoplasty performed?

During otoplasty, Dr. Will makes a small incision behind the ear and then removes/remodels the cartilage and skin to effectively “pin back” the ears. The procedure is usually done under general anesthesia. The scar that results is very inconspicuous and the ears will exhibit a more proportional appearance.

What happens after otoplasty surgery?

After otoplasty, recovery takes approximately 2 weeks or less, during which patients are advised to refrain from placing pressure on the ears, protect the ears with soft dressings, and wear a special headband.
