Radiesse® is one of the most popular wrinkle fillers available today, with well over one million syringes administered worldwide since 2002. Dr. Michael J. Will uses Radiesse to treat signs of aging that appear in your skin.
As you age, the collagen in your skin breaks down. Collagen helps provide the elasticity in youthful skin. Radiesse can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improve your skin by stimulating your body to produce more collagen.
Radiesse is composed of calcium hydroxylapatite. It is a safe, biocompatible, and durable substance that consists of microspheres suspended in water-based gel.
What Can Radiesse Treat?
Radiesse helps correct signs of facial aging that are caused by a loss of volume and collagen in the skin. At Will Surgical Arts in Frederick MD, we can use Radiesse to treat the following conditions:
- Nasolabial folds – lines from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth
- Marionette lines – lines that extend down along each side of the mouth
- Facial fat loss – loss of facial volume due to aging or other conditions
Surgeons have also used Radiesse for other off-label uses such as nasal augmentation, cheek augmentation, and correction of depressed scars.
How Is Radiesse Treatment Performed?
Before your first Radiesse treatment, you will discuss your goals for Radiesse treatment. Your Radiesse treatment will be a simple and fast outpatient procedure. The doctor or aesthetician may apply a topical anesthetic to the area before your treatment, to minimize your discomfort. Radiesse can also be mixed with lidocaine prior to injection.

During the treatment, we use a fine needle to inject Radiesse beneath your skin. After the injection, we may also gently massage the area to help ensure a smooth, even result.
You will see the volumizing effect of your treatment right away. The gel-filler provides volume to the treated area immediately. Suspended in that gel filler are calcium-based microspheres. These microspheres actually stimulate your body to produce more collagen. Your body will produce more collagen over time (providing long-term results), but the results can be appreciated immediately.
After Your Treatment With Radiesse
You will see the results of your Radiesse treatment right away. The results of your treatment can last 10-14 months. The results are long lasting because even as the water-based gel filler is naturally broken down, your body will produce more collagen. This increased collagen will reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and grooves.
After Radiesse injection, you won’t need any downtime. You should be able to get right back to your normal routine.
Although Radiesse is well tolerated by most patients, some may experience minor side effects like redness, swelling, itching, and bruising. These minor side effects clear up quickly for most patients. You can use an ice pack to reduce swelling and discomfort.
If you dislike the appearance of lines along your nose and mouth, or want to restore lost facial volume, Radiesse may be the treatment for you. We perform Radiesse injections in our cosmetic surgery practice near Frederick and Urbana, Maryland.
