Every year, hundreds of thousands of women undergo breast augmentation surgery, making it the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure since 2006. When deciding to undergo breast enhancement, it is important to consider all of your options. Like any major purchase, it’s important to do your homework and find out your options.
To help you feel more comfortable in making decisions regarding your breast implants, here is a quick discussion guide to review before
your consultation with your board-certified cosmetic surgeon.
What Size Should I Be?
Obviously, this is one of the more critical questions regarding the surgery. After all, it is a procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of your breasts. However, it’s not as simple as telling your cosmetic surgeon your ideal cup size. While this may help him have a better idea of what your expectations are, there are still several factors to consider such as the size of your ribcage, the shape of your chest and the current size of your natural breasts.
Your cosmetic surgeon should have several years of experience and training, and will know what is appropriate and safe for you — listen to him. This doesn’t mean your cosmetic surgeon makes the final decision on the size of your breasts; he is there as a means to provide guidance so that you are happy with your final results. If this means saying no to shooting for size F breasts, it is for your own good. Just look at what
Heidi Montag from The Hills went through before finally having
a breast implant revision.
Silicone or Saline?
Aside from size, “What type of breast implants?” is the next question women should ask themselves when choosing their breast implants. It is a purely personal decision, as both saline and silicone implants are safe.
The key differences between silicone and saline implants (other than fill, clearly) is that saline implants are filled with a saltwater solution which isn’t added until they are placed, and silicone implants are pre-filled with a cohesive silicone gel that holds its shape when cut in half – hence their nickname,
gummy bear implants.
During the past few years, silicone implants have outranked saline implants in popularity by a significant margin. Many believe silicone gel implants look and feel more natural, but others prefer the look of saline implants.
Round or Anatomically/Tear-Drop Shaped?
This question also plays into the decision between silicone and saline because some silicone implants feature a tear drop shape to mimic the appearance of natural breasts while saline implants are round.
