Turn Back Time with Expert Facelift Surgery | Maryland

Facelift Surgery at Will Surgical Arts

Aging affects the face gradually as a series of small changes that add up over time. The skin begins to lose its elasticity. Fatty tissue shifts downward. The jawline softens, the cheeks sag, and folds deepen around the nose and mouth. At some point, the face in the mirror can start to feel out of step with how you actually feel on the inside.

A facelift, known medically as a rhytidectomy, is the most comprehensive surgical solution available for addressing these changes. It works by tightening the underlying muscles and connective tissue of the face and neck, removing excess skin, and repositioning what's left for a smoother, more lifted, more naturally youthful result. The goal isn't to make you look like a different person. It's to make you look like the best, most refreshed version of yourself.

At Will Surgical Arts, facelift surgery is performed by our surgeons, Dr. Michael Will and Dr. Brian Wil, who bring decades of combined experience in facial cosmetic and maxillofacial surgery. Their deep understanding of the face as a structural system means every facelift is approached with precision and artistry in equal measure.

What a Facelift Addresses & What to Expect

Everything You Need to Know About Facelift Surgery

A facelift is one of the most transformative procedures in cosmetic surgery, and it's also one that patients tend to have a lot of questions about. Here's a thorough look at who's a good candidate, how the surgery works, and what recovery involves.

What Can a Facelift Correct?

A facelift primarily addresses the lower two-thirds of the face and the neck. The specific concerns it's most effective for include:

  • Sagging cheeks that have lost their lifted, youthful position and begun to descend toward the jawline
  • Deep smile lines and facial folds, particularly the lines that run from the sides of the nose down toward the corners of the mouth
  • Jowling, where loose skin along the jawline creates a heavy, undefined lower face
  • Loose or excess neck skin, including the soft tissue laxity that can create what's sometimes called a "turkey neck" appearance
  • Loss of definition between the chin and neck, where the transition has become blended rather than distinct.

It's worth noting that a facelift addresses the structure and skin of the face but doesn't treat issues around the eyes or forehead directly. For patients who want a more complete facial rejuvenation, a facelift can be combined with eyelid surgery, a brow lift, chin augmentation, fat grafting, or other procedures. Our surgeons will help you think through what combination makes the most sense for your goals.

Are You a Good Candidate?

The best candidates for facelift surgery are men and women who are in good overall health, don't smoke, and have realistic expectations about what surgery can achieve. Age is less of a factor than overall health and the degree of facial aging present. Some patients pursue a facelift in their forties, while others wait until their sixties or beyond. The right time is whenever the changes in your face are bothering you enough to act on, and when you're in a good physical and emotional place to undergo surgery.

Our surgeons use photographs and computer imaging during the consultation process to help document your current appearance and talk through what's realistically achievable. This gives you a clear picture of what to expect before any decisions are made.

How the Procedure Works

Facelift surgery at Will Surgical Arts is performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia in our on-site accredited surgical center. The procedure can take several hours depending on the extent of correction needed and whether any additional procedures are being performed at the same time.

Incisions are carefully placed to keep them as discreet as possible. They typically begin inside the hairline at the temple, run along the natural crease in front of the ear, then continue around the earlobe and behind the ear, ending in the hair at the back of the scalp. These locations allow any resulting scars to be naturally concealed within the hairline and the ear's contours.

Through these incisions, the skin is gently lifted away from the underlying tissue. The deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue are then tightened and repositioned, which provides a more durable and natural-looking lift than simply pulling the skin alone would achieve. Excess skin is trimmed away, and in some cases, fatty deposits beneath the chin and neck are also addressed. The incisions are then closed with small, precise sutures.

Facelift Recovery

Facelift recovery takes a bit more time than some smaller procedures, but most patients find it very manageable with the right preparation and support. Here's what you can generally expect:

  • You'll want to have a capable helper with you for the first few days after surgery to assist with wound care and daily activities.
  • Bandages are applied during surgery and removed within a few days.
  • Sutures are typically removed within the first 7 to 14 days, sometimes in stages, to support the best possible healing.
  • Swelling and discoloration are most noticeable in the first 2 weeks and gradually resolve after that.
  • Some tightness in the face is normal for several weeks following surgery. There may also be minor temporary changes in your hair pattern near the incision sites.
  • Sun exposure should be avoided for several weeks while the incisions heal.
  • Because healing is gradual, you may not see your final results for up to 6 months, once everything has settled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a facelift make me look natural, or will people be able to tell I've had something done?

When performed well, a facelift should make you look refreshed and younger, not obviously "done." The goal is to restore a natural version of your face from years past, not to create a pulled, tight, or artificial appearance. Our surgeons take a conservative, anatomy-driven approach that prioritizes natural results above all else.

How long do facelift results last?

Facelift results are long-lasting, though they don't freeze your face in time. Most patients enjoy their results for many years before any significant new aging becomes noticeable. Factors like sun exposure, smoking, and significant weight changes can affect how long results last. Patients who maintain a healthy lifestyle, protect their skin from the sun, and take good care of their skin tend to preserve their results the longest.

Can a facelift be combined with other procedures?

Yes, and it's very common to do so. A facelift addresses the lower face and neck beautifully, but it doesn't treat the upper face or the eye area. Many patients combine their facelift with a brow lift to address forehead heaviness and drooping brows, eyelid surgery to refresh the eye area, or fat grafting to restore volume that's been lost. Chin augmentation and liposuction are also frequently paired with facelift surgery. Combining procedures means going through one recovery period and seeing a more harmonious overall result. Our surgeons will help you figure out what combination, if any, makes the most sense for your goals during your consultation.
