If you’re considering
breast augmentation surgery, you’re probably curious about the recovery process. How many days should you take off from work? How long until you can start exercising again? When should you replace all your bras?
Each person will recover in their own unique way, but there are some general guidelines that should be followed in order to ensure the fastest, smoothest healing time possible.
Dr. Michael Will is always available to answer questions and address concerns after your surgery, and he will give you detailed recovery instructions as well.

Breast Augmentation Recovery Timeline
Immediately after your breast surgery, you’ll need someone to drive you home and take care of your household chores and child care needs for the first few days. If you have young children, this is especially important, as you should not be doing any heavy lifting right after surgery.
Most women take anywhere from 3 days to a full week off of work following their breast augmentation surgery. If your job requires strenuous activity, you may need to take two weeks off to be on the safe side.
A typical
breast augmentation recovery timeline goes something like this:
- First day: Rest and recover at home
- First week: Gradually resume light exercise such as walking, return to work if you have a desk job
- First two weeks: Wear a bra at all times except when showering
- Three to four weeks: Resume more vigorous exercise, but still take care not to overly strain the chest muscles
During the first few weeks, your breasts will be swollen. They may appear asymmetric or overly round, but this is normal. Be patient, and after the first month or so you should see your final results. You want to wait until the swelling fully dissipates before buying expensive new bras, as you won’t know your final new size until the swelling goes away.
Tips for a Smooth Breast Augmentation Recovery
There are some steps you can take to help make your breast augmentation recovery as smooth as possible. These include:
- Don’t push yourself too hard too fast. It’s very important to take it easy and allow your body the time it needs to heal.
- Invest in a comfortable recovery bra. You’ll need to wear a bra at all times for the first two weeks after surgery, so making sure it’s comfortable and easy to put on and take off will make your life easier.
- Prep your home before surgery. If you don’t have anyone to cook or clean for you after your surgery, it’s a good idea to prep meals and get any urgent household tasks done before your surgery so you don’t have to worry about it.
- Make sure you have a supply of easy to put on clothes that don’t require you to pull anything over your head.
